D2Lers Pitch in to Put Trash in Its Place

topics

D2Lers from the Toronto Office celebrated Earth Day with a spring clean-up event at Queen’s Park. The event was organized by the Toronto Social Committee and in total, 16 D2Lers collected ten bags of garbage from the park. D2Lers were able to use one of their two paid Volunteer Time Off days to devote a few hours to this cause. These hours contributed to D2L’s goal of D2Lers contributing 2,500 hours of volunteer time collectively to their communities in celebration of D2L’s 25th anniversary.

While there are several parks near the office, the group selected Queen’s Park as they felt it needed more care than some others in the area. They had a large group and wanted to ensure their actions would make an impact. Queen’s Park seemed like the perfect place for the event in terms of location, size and community significance.

The Toronto Office Social Committee is a group dedicated to planning and hosting various events throughout the year. These events foster a sense of community and fun among D2Lers. While the Toronto office may be smaller than HQ, it is mighty. D2Lers Jackie Guan, product manager, and Nick Florian, software developer, co-chair the committee. “Our office is fairly small compared to HQ, but the people are so passionate, kind and smart, and we love coming together to help out others,” said Guan.

This isn’t the first time that the employees at the Toronto office have rallied together to give back to the local community. The group has also volunteered multiple times at the Parkdale Food Bank located near the Toronto Office. Volunteering with the food bank originated as a one-time event; however, due to the amount of interest, they ended up volunteering on multiple occasions. The team really enjoys coming together for these opportunities as it’s a great chance to build community and do something positive.

The Toronto Office is a tight-knit community. They have done a wide range of events together including watching the Toronto Blue Jays play, celebrating Lunar New Year with hot pot, and hosting monthly board game nights. The Social Committee isn’t stopping here. They plan to arrange an Earth Day clean up on an annual basis and will be back at the food bank soon. They are also getting together at Ripley’s Aquarium this summer.

D2L continues to offer employees flexible work arrangements and the ability to work from home or in person. The Toronto Office, located at 215 Spadina Avenue, offers space for collaboration and many amenities such as meeting rooms, a kitchen, a rooftop patio, bicycle parking, paid vehicle parking close by, and dual monitor setups at each workstation. Plus, it’s dog friendly.
