LIBF

Migrating to D2L Brightspace for a complete, end-to-end learning experience

LIBF (formerly known as the London Institute of Banking & Finance) is a higher education provider which offers degree programmes, as well as professional education for the financial services sector. Learners can take a range of undergraduate, postgraduate or professional learning programmes, sit exams and qualify for licences to practise in the industry. To provide an interactive, fully online experience that meets learners’ needs, LIBF migrated from Moodle to D2L Brightspace, improving learner satisfaction.

Challenge

To deliver a personalised, engaging learner experience

LIBF is committed to equipping thousands of professional educational learners to gain the skills and expertise they need, and it uses pioneering educational technology to help. It believes a one-size-fits-all approach is not the best way to unlock potential and that a flexible, personalised experience that adapts to a learner’s pace, priorities and lifestyle is the key to success.

“Technology is fundamental to what we deliver,” says Claire Harding, director of operations at LIBF. “We constantly seek to use technology to bring education to life, to create a tailored experience and make sure everyone undertaking our courses learns in a way that is right for them, that engages them and keeps them wanting to learn.”

LIBF used Moodle for eLearning but felt that something was lacking. “We wanted the ability to build a more completely digital, online technologically enabled experience,” explains Claire.

The key objective was to optimise the learner’s experience through a standardised approach that would be interactive, scalable and deliver operational efficiencies too.

“Many learners are fully online now,” adds Claire. “Having something more interactive is key—they don’t want to read a PDF on a page, they want something that really guides them through and engages them. Also, a system that enables you to build portable, stackable units, that can be repurposed and incorporate lots of different media, is beneficial to achieving positive outcomes.”

Solution

A transition to D2L Brightspace delivers feature-rich learning

LIBF conducted extensive research into solutions in the market and discovered D2L’s proposition delivered all the key things it needed for its strategic direction.

“The D2L team was really responsive,” says Claire. “There were lots of opportunities to ask questions, have demonstrations and explore how it would work.”

Once the decision had been made to go ahead, D2L was on hand to help LIBF through the transition. With multiple qualifications, apprenticeships and a range of legacy systems, the task appeared complex, but Claire affirms the “amazing relationship” with D2L helped during the due diligence phase and transition to Brightspace.

Brightspace has transformed our approach to education. Its sleek, modern interface combined with powerful editing tools enables us to create high-quality, consistent courses that automatically adapt to any device.

LIBF quickly took advantage of Brightspace’s comprehensive features and functionality. HTML pages provide content organised in topic format for learning materials and in separate folders for guidance, resources and more. With templates, LIBF can build pages quickly and simply and import content to reuse across course sites.

SCORM, H5P and embeddable content support ensures an interactive, multimedia experience, as do video assignments with integrated Bongo support so students’ videos can be marked. Meanwhile, ‘widgets’ across course sites help convey information clearly.

Discussion forums enable peer and tutor interaction while quizzes and assignments test knowledge. Certificates and awards are generated automatically when students achieve the criteria.

With release conditions, LIBF makes content available to students at the right time, according to group enrolment, completion of other content, quiz attempts, assignment submissions and more.

LIBF also uses intelligent agents to issue automated announcements of key events, and a calendar to display important dates such as assessments and webinars. Measurement and reporting are simpler now—temperature check surveys ascertain student satisfaction during their studies, while a hub generates data sets on student usage and progress across the course’s content and assessments.

Results

The complete, end-to-end learning experience improves customer satisfaction

All LIBF learners now use Brightspace for a complete, end-to-end learning experience. Most companies now use the net promoter score (NPS) as a way of measuring customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. Since introducing Brightspace, LIBF has seen NPS improvements in all but one of its professional learning products. “We have quite a high target of NPS, take feedback and use it actively to constantly improve the experience and content,” says Claire.

LIBF is delighted to receive consistent positive student feedback about Brightspace’s simplicity of use and ease of navigation and to have multiple touchpoints through which it can evaluate the learner journey. Claire adds: “We can capture feedback as people are learning and act on it in real-time, as well as a group, if we see a recurring theme.”

The scalable, portable units LIBF now builds through Brightspace equip it to use content more freely and get it to market more quickly. Throughout its transition and since, LIBF has valued its strong working partnership with D2L and the knowledge and experience of other Brightspace customers in the D2L Community.

The platform has enabled a more proactive approach to programme and experience improvement.

LIBF is now piloting exams on the platform. “Additionally, Brightspace has allowed us to reach new international markets, such as China, through built-in tools like the Media Library, which lets us stream videos and audio directly from the virtual learning environment,” adds Danny Ball, LIBF’s digital learning manager.

LIBF set out to deliver a more complete digital learning experience that would help prepare its professional learners for their roles in banking and finance. It has transformed learning delivery, introducing digital tools and mechanisms for a more engaging, convenient and operationally efficient learner, tutor and administrator experience. The success of LIBF’s transition to Brightspace, working with D2L and its extended community, is reflected in very good NPS ratings and positive learner feedback.
